Wayfinding at Boston Scientific

Boston Scientific Value Sign

We loved this project – working closely with Graphic Designer, Colin Byrne of Totem Design in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford and the Management Team at Boston Scientific in Clonmel to create and install their internal Wayfinding and Brand Signage.

Firstly, the Directional Signage. The distinctive blue graphics that catch the eye are either vinyl wall manifestations or glued acrylic mounted off the wall on stand-offs. These are coupled with cable system signs to list the destinations. Each destination is made off cut vinyl letters glued to the face with frosted vinyl film on the back. There are 18 of these cable signs throughout the building!  Essential to keep people on the right path.

The Brand Signage includes, what Boston Scientific refer to as the ‘Parthenon Sign’. It is a complex sign that depicts the company’s mission statement and ethos. The sign is made of layered foamex mounted on stand-offs. Mounted at the back of the sign are remote controlled RGB LED’s.  The challenge for the fitters was to conceal x4 times the normal volume of cables. Not so easy.

Another important Brand Sign is the Value Sign. It depicts the company’s values. The sign is made up of 6 circles, one for each value.  The face of each circle is held to the back by magnets. They are removable to facilitate changing the graphics. Each value is made of white acrylic letters and the larger title ‘Values’ in the centre is made of sprayed and filled foamex.

Another sign that deserves a mention is the Welcome Lightbox. It highlights the global reach of Boston Scientific.

Boston Scientific is a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices whose products are used in a broad range of interventional medical specialties. It employs 25,000 people and is a global leader in the development of less-invasive medical devices.

First established in Ireland in 1994, with the support of IDA, Boston Scientific has grown to be the largest medical device employer in Ireland.  Through its 3 Irish sites – located in Clonmel, Cork,  and Galway – the company exports approximately 10 million medical devices worldwide annually, including stents, balloons, platinum coils, catheters, inflation devices, pacemakers and ICDs.

The Clonmel operation was established in Ireland in 1998 by Guidant Corporation and was acquired by Boston Scientific in April 2006. The site specialises in the Development, Manufacture and Distribution of Implantable Pacemakers and Defibrillators for the Cardiac Rhythm Management business, which represents a key growth area for the company.  The site also supports some products for the Neuromodulation Division.
