The Signage Strategy Behind a Smarter Shopping Experience

23.07.2026 ————

Most people don't notice good wayfinding. That's exactly the point.

When you walk into a shopping centre and find what you're looking for without a second thought, when the directory feels obvious, the corridors feel logical, the exits appear exactly where you expect them - that's not luck. That's a considered signage system doing its job quietly in the background.

Why wayfinding is never just signage

A space like Blackpool with over 40 units across a substantial footprint, a retail park, car park, and multiple entrances present a real navigational challenge. Shoppers arrive from different directions, have different destinations, and move through the space in different ways depending on whether it's a Tuesday afternoon or a Saturday morning.

Good wayfinding accounts for all of that. It's not about putting up arrows. It's about understanding how people actually move through a space and designing a system that meets them where they are - at the entrance, at the junction, at the moment of uncertainty and answers the question before they've had to ask it.

Designing the system

We approached the wayfinding at Blackpool as an extension of the brand identity we'd already built. The same design language - typography, colour, material - carries through every directory board, every overhead sign, every floor-level marker. Nothing feels like an afterthought, because nothing is.

The hierarchy matters too. Not every sign needs to say everything. The system is layered: primary navigation for first-time visitors, secondary signage for orientation within zones, tertiary details at the unit level. Each layer has a job and knowing where one ends and the next begins is what keeps the whole thing from becoming visual noise.

On site

With the interior fascia lettering now largely in place, the wayfinding installation is the next chapter on site. Our team is fitting manifestation and directional structures, overhead hanging and entrance navigation signs, with all of them being fabricated in Dublin, all installed by our own crew, all designed to integrate seamlessly with the broader interior environment the rebrand is creating.

Walk through Blackpool once it's done and you probably won't stop to think about the signage. You'll just know where you're going. That's the goal. That's the craft.
