First Impressions Start Outside: Bringing the Rebrand to the Exterior

02.09.2026 ————

By the time a shopper walks through the doors of Blackpool Shopping Centre, the rebrand has already been speaking to them for several minutes.

It started when they turned off the N20. It continued through the car park. It was there at the entrance before they even reached for the door. The exterior signage isn't the final layer of a rebrand. It's the first one most people ever see.

The outside is the brand in public

There's a common assumption that signage is mostly an interior concern - shop fronts, directories, the visual experience inside a building. But for a centre like Blackpool, the exterior environment is vast, visible from distance, and experienced by far more people than those who ever come inside. Every driver on the North Ring Road. Every pedestrian on Commons Road. Every customer pulling into the car park.

That's a significant audience, and it deserves a considered response.

Designing for scale

Exterior signage at a site like this operates across multiple scales simultaneously. At distance, you need impact - bold, readable, unmistakable from the road. Up close, you need detail and finish - materials and fabrication quality that hold up to scrutiny. In between, you need a coherent visual system that connects one element to the next, from the main entrance fascia to the parking directional signs.

Installation

Getting signage onto the outside of a busy, operational retail centre is a different discipline to interior work. Access equipment, traffic management, working around trading hours - the logistics are as much a part of the job as the fabrication. Our installation team managed the full exterior fit-out, bringing the same attention to detail on site that went into the design and production stages.

Inside and outside, finally connected

What the exterior installation completes is something that only becomes visible when both phases are done. Walk out of the centre and look back at it. Walk in from the car park and look ahead. The visual language is consistent - the same brand, the same design thinking, the same quality of execution, carrying from the road all the way to the individual shop fronts inside.
